KIS Medical Records

Pros: KARE Information Services (KIS) provides a medical record retrieval service. The company securely stores medical history information for users. Requests for medical file retrieval are included in the annual fee and there is no limit. A video explains the process, but does not show specific forms. KIS acts as the connection between doctors so that they all can see a user’s entire medical record.

Cons: $98 USD/year fee for services with $15 one-time setup fee may be prohibitive for some users. See below for further pricing information. Users may also incur fees from healthcare providers to transfer records. There is no free trial for potential customers to try the interface. Records are not available online for ease of access.

The Bottomline: For a rather large fee, users can have KIS collate and store medical records from multiple sources on their secure site. The data may be accessed by phone, fax, or computer in an emergency. Without a free trial, potential users cannot test the program to see if it works for them, or if they need this level of EHR/PHR. The video preview does not provide users with easy to view screenshots of the PHR component.

Summary:
KIS Medical Records offers a fee-based PHR/EHR for medical record storage and retrieval. All information is handled buy KIS rather than by the user. While this adds a layer of security to the data, it may prove less convenient when users need access or wish to make changes or additions.

Data Collection and Storage
Data is collected from health care providers and hospital records as well as by users. KIS employees organize the information into categories. The data is then stored on a secure computer that can only send, not receive information. This ensures that the data may not be compromised. Files are backed up daily.

Data included Doctors’ Dictations, Lab Tests, Procedures, Radiology, and ECG Reports.

Security and Privacy
Records are password protected and only accessible by authorized persons. Any emergency requests will be verified by KIS phoning the user prior to allowing access. If the user is unable to be reached, KIS staff will verify the requesting healthcare facility and physician credentials. Records are not accessible online. KIS is HIPPA compliant.

Identification Card
Users receive an identification card that contains information regarding medical record storage with KIS. Users have the option of a printed password on the card.

Travel Records
Users planning to travel may pre-authorize access to their account from any location or, with two weeks notice, request a hardcopy of medical records to take with them.

Secure Email
Users may contact healthcare providers directly through the KIS EHR email connection.
